The Worringer Bruch is a 164  hectare , swampy flat landscape in the far north of Cologne . This is an approximately 8000 year old, now almost completely silted up meander arch of the Rhine . The area is named after the immediately adjacent Cologne district of Worringen , which was once an independent city with a history spanning over a thousand years (first documented mention in 922 ).

General

The Worringer Bruch is geographically the lowest point in Cologne at 37.5 m above sea level (the highest is in the Königsforst at 118.3 m ). The water level is strongly dependent on the water level of the Rhine. Today, the Worringer Bruch is home to numerous types of forest and cultivated landscapes such as pastures and orchards . However, it is primarily a meadow landscape . In addition, the Worringer Bruch offers a regionally valuable habitat for several plant and animal species, some of which are endangered.

It is of enormous importance for the preservation of nature , rare animal and plant species, as one of Cologne's “green lungs” as well as for recreation and nature experience ( hiking , exploring the fauna and flora ). In 1991 the Worringer Bruch was designated as a nature reserve.
