The nature reserve is located in the natural area of the Bergische Heideterrasse . It extends on the western edge of the Paffrather Kalkmulde between Mutzbach and Strunde . The 59.00 hectare area is located with the Thurner Forest between Bergisch Gladbacher Strasse, Duckterather Weg, Katharinenkammerweg, Heinrich-Strünker-Strasse and Waltherstrasse. It was designated as a nature reserve in 1969. The area is cut through by the S-Bahn line 11 (S11) , a natural gas line , a high-voltage line and Paffrather Straße. The three parts of the Thielenbruch nature reserve are located north of the area .
Flora and fauna
There used to be on the right bank funds Terrace extensive Moore , which were largely destroyed by drainage measures. Both nature reserves have been preserved as wetlands. In the east of the area there are several lime springs in the vicinity of the Katharinenkammerweg. You feed on a limestone bog that borders a pipe grass meadow . Alder forests can be found near the water . Drier areas are covered with oak and birch . In other areas there are reed beds , willow bushes and an intermediate moor with swaying peat moss areas .
There are both acidic and calcareous as well as dry and wet soils that alternate over short distances. This diversity of locations is complemented by the only preserved limestone moor in the entire region. It offers a refuge for highly endangered species such as the helmets' damsel , the bellied diaper snail , the broad-leaved cottongrass , the marsh stendrums , the arm-flowered swamp rush , the flea sedge and the small water hose . Nature conservation applies to the preservation and development of the area close to the city, which is characterized by rare wet habitats, with its limestone moor and its marsh grass meadows as well as wet and floodplain forests as a refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species; among them there are 12 dragonfly species alone .
