Robert "Bob" McKinlay (born October 10, 1932 in Lochgelly , † August 2002 in West Bridgford ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Bob McKinlay began his career with the Scottish amateur club Bowhill Rovers and in 1951 joined the English club Nottingham Forest , which had just been promoted to the Football League Second Division . Under head coach Billy Walker , the defender spent the following six seasons with Forest in the then second-highest division. In the 1956/57 season succeeded as a runner-up in the Football League First Division . The following season was finished in tenth place and relegation ensured. In the following year, McKinley occupied a secure midfield position with the club and was able to show success in the FA Cup , the most important English cup competition. After he had entered the competition with the team for the third round, Tooting & Mitcham United and Grimsby Town were defeated in the following two rounds . The first two games against five-round opponents Birmingham City each ended with a 1-1 draw. Ultimately, the Reds decided the decisive third encounter 5-0 for themselves. After two more wins, the team qualified for the final of the cup competition. The trophy was won with a 2-1 win over Luton Town .

He took the season 1961/62 with the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup for the first time in club history with Forest in a European Cup contest, but failed in the first round to eventual winners FC Valencia . The second participation in 1967/68 ended early with an elimination in the second round against FC Zurich . His greatest success in the English championship he achieved with the club in the 1966/67 season , when this was completed in second place behind Manchester United . In 1969 he ended his career.

With a total of 685 competitive appearances for Nottingham Forest, including 614 in league games, Kinlay is the club's record player. He was remembered above all for his consistent and "elegant" performances in central defense, whereby the effective interaction with the Welshman Terry Hennessey was particularly emphasized. Kinlay was considered a "gentleman" on the pitch and rarely missed a game. He died in August 2002 at the age of 69.
