Robert John "Bob" Roberts (born April 3, 1859 in West Bromwich , † October 28, 1929 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) was an English football goalkeeper . He drew attention to himself especially towards the end of the 1880s at the club West Bromwich Albion and in the English national team .

In 1879, The West Bromwich Strollers , the forerunner of what would later become the football club, was founded by a group of workers from the Salter's Spring factory. These initially played cricket in Dartmouth Park , but decided in 1882 to found a football club, West Bromwich Albion (short: "WBA"). Roberts, who also worked in the factory, played for the club for the first time on January 29, 1881 and was from that time on in almost every field position until he finally became the team's goalkeeper.

In the early years, Roberts was the club's top player. In March 1887 he played his first international game for England against Scotland and lost 2: 3. Other players were Joseph Lofthouse , James Forrest and Fred Dewhurst . Roberts also took part in two other international games against Ireland , which ended victoriously with 5: 1 and 9: 1.

Roberts left WBA in 1889, but returned again in 1891 and took part in nine other games. In 1892 he left the club for good and moved to Aston Villa . Later that year, however, he eventually turned his back on professional football.

Bob Roberts died in 1929.
