Bobby Hackett, actually Robert William Hackett Jr. (born August 16, 1959 in Yonkers , New York ), is a former American freestyle swimmer . He won the silver medal in the 1500 meter freestyle at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and held the world record for the 800 meter freestyle on the long track from June 21, 1976 to March 23, 1979 (see also the list of swimming world records for the 800 meter freestyle ). Bobby Hackett is not to be confused and is not related or related by marriage to his namesake, the three-time Australian Olympic champion Grant Hackett .

At the Pan American Games in Mexico City in 1975 , Hackett achieved his first major international success: He won the 1500 meters in 15: 53.10 minutes ahead of compatriot Paul Hartloff (15: 57.32) and the Brazilian Djan Madruga (16:30, 08). He also fought for silver over 400 meters in 4: 03.38 behind team-mate Douglas Northway (4: 00.51) and ahead of Djan Madruga (4: 06.83).
At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Hackett won the silver medal over 1500 meters in 15: 03.91 minutes behind the American Brian Goodell (15: 02.40) and ahead of the Australian Stephen Holland (15: 04.66) .
Two years later at the World Swimming Championships in Berlin in 1978 there were two medals: gold with the US relay over 4 × 200 meters (ahead of the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany) and bronze in 15: 23.38 on its special course, the 1500 meters, behind the Russian Vladimir Salnikow (15: 03.99) and the Yugoslav Borut Petrič (15: 20.77).
Bronze over 1500 meters at the Pan American Games in 1979 in San Juan, Puerto Rican, was one of the last great successes at international events.
