Bobby Smith (musician)

Robert Lewis "Bobby" Smith (born January 3, 1907 , † June 6, 1995 ) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues musician ( alto saxophone , arrangement, composition).

Live and act

Smith, who came from Rhode Island , played from the early 1940s with Erskine Hawkins , with whose orchestra the first recordings for Jubilee Records were made. For Hawkins he wrote "Tippin 'It"; the track became Hawkins' biggest hit and was also covered by Ralph Flanagan , Billy Vaughn , Johnny Hodges and Lou Donaldson . With his own band he accompanied Valaida Snow on recordings for Apollo , in this decade he also played with Willie Bryant . From 1949 he recorded under his own name Jump Blues - and R&B numbers such as "Dash Hound Boogie" and "Buffalo Nickel" for United and Apollo; in his bands played u. a. Duke Anderson , Julian Dash , Ace Harris , Bobby Johnson, Jimmy Harris, Haywood Henry , Sammy Lowe and Leroy Kirkland . In the 1950s he worked a. a. with the singers Jimmy Mitchell and Sonny Knight, the vocal band The Larks ("Bad Pecker", Apollo 431) and with Lucky Millinder . In 1978 he recorded with Big Joe Turner and in 1980 in Paris with Jimmy Witherspoon . The last recordings were made in 1983 with Panama Francis , with whom he performed at the Bern Jazz Festival. After Tom Lord , he participated in 63 recording sessions between 1943 and 1983. In his playing on the alto saxophone he was influenced by Johnny Hodges.
