Bodine was a Dutch band from The Hague that was active from 1978 to 1984. Besides Arjen Lucassen (guitar), it consisted of Jay van Feggelen (vocals, was later replaced by Axel Joseph Langemeijer), Rheno Xeros (guitar), Armand van der Hoff (bass) and Gerard Haitsma (drums). Bodine was the first professional band in which Lucassen was a full-time guitarist.

Band history

Around 1974 drummer Gerard Haitsma left the hard rock band Lava . For two years he trained his drumming in a ballet school . Then he met guitarist Rene Rijsdijk (Rheno Xeros). The two jammed together and found a permanent bass player in Armand van der Hoff. After some time in the rehearsal room, they began to look for a singer and they met Jan van Feggelen, who, however, was from Amsterdam . Van Feggelen had already gained experience in various rock and blues bands. The first songs were written. From 1978 they began to play live first under the name Dorreen, then as Bodine. The original line-up of the group consisted of the singer Jan Van Feggelen, the guitarist Rheno Xeros, the bassist Armand van der Hoff and the drummer Gerrard Haitsma. After a brief interlude with Richard Cornelisse as the second guitarist, Alfred Lagarde, a radio presenter friend, was given a tape with recordings. After he had listened to it, he got the band a record deal with Rhinoceros Records (distributed by WEA International ).

The doctoral phase began with the record deal. Bodine's music was played by several radio stations. Gerard Du Prie supported the campaign. The radio stations were given the self-titled debut album in the form of a concrete block to show how “heavy” the music was. The album was finally released in 1981 and was favorably received by the Dutch press. It sold about 12,000 times.

This was followed by Bold as Brass in 1982 with the new singer Axel Joseph Langemeijer and second guitarist Arjen Lucassen, known as "Iron Anthony". The album sold around 20,000 times across Europe. In 1983 Three Times Running appeared without Armand van der Hoff. Jeroen "Jeronimo" Bos was specified as the new bass player, but he was not yet to be heard on this album. Rather, the bass was played by the two guitarists. This album also sold quite well, around 22,000 copies worldwide.

After the Earthquake Festival in 1984 the band broke up in August. Arjen Lucassen left the band to join Vengeance . The successors were Henry van Manen (ex-Picture) and Herman Frank (ex- Accept ). Ultimately, however, the band broke up.

Around 1992 a new attempt was made. Erik van der Ven, Gerard Haitsma, Jeroen Bos and Oscar Holleman worked on new material. First Robert Soeterboek (ex-Vulture) was supposed to take over the vocals, but then Jan van Feggelen came back. A 5 track demo was recorded but never released. A total of 13 pieces are said to have been produced during this time.

Axel Langemeijer, who had a career as a graphic designer after Bodine, died on March 19, 2003.

Music genre

The 1981 debut album Bodine mainly contained blues rock in the style of Bad Company , Status Quo and Whitesnake . From the second album, the style changed to the then popular heavy metal, which was strongly influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal . Tony Jasper and Derek Oliver also wrote in The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal that the band is often compared to Whitesnake, but Bodine has more power. They described the music as bluesy metal. Even Martin Popoff described the band's debut album in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties as Blues Metal, where the band had, however, turned in her later in the stronger metal. The band sounds like the best of Whitesnake on the album, as good as Bad Company has never been and as ZZ Top could have been. He compared the guitar work with that of Accept . However, the album was released ten years too early before retro bands The Four Horsemen and The Black Crowes became known. Bold as Brass is much more metal-heavy, although the band still has a blues part. Popoff drew another comparison to Accept. The band continued on their way to more metal on Three Times Running . The group is also still comparable to Accept. In the eight songs that the album offers, the drums hardly vary. In his review of the re-release of Three Times Running , Andreas Schöwe from Metal Hammer wrote that the electric guitars are reminiscent of the sound of bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
