Bogdan Borčić (born September 26, 1926 in Ljubljana , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; died April 24, 2014 in Ljubljana, Slovenia ) was a Slovenian painter and graphic artist.

Life

Bogdan Borčić was the son of a Slovenian mother and a Croatian father and grew up in Ljubljana. After the German conquest of Yugoslavia in 1941, he joined a resistance group when he was 15 and produced leaflets. He was arrested, put into youth arrest and on August 10, 1944, was deported to the Dachau concentration camp . There he fell ill with appendicitis and barely survived. He was then used in work details, most recently in the clothing store . He was temporarily tortured in a standing bunker. In the concentration camp, Borčić illustrated an illegal Slovenian camp newspaper. He was eventually liberated by the US Army.

From 1945 he studied painting with Gojmir Anton Kos at the Art Academy in Ljubljana and after graduating in 1950 he took lessons with Gabrijel Stupica , in 1958/59 he studied with Johnny Friedlaender in Paris. Borčić established himself as an artist and focused on graphics in particular. From 1969 to 1984 he taught at the Art Academy in Ljubljana, where he received a professorship for graphics in 1976. From 1980 he lived in Slovenj Gradec . In 1965 he received the Prešeren Prize and again in 2005 for his life's work, in 1982 the Jakopič Prize . In 2004 he returned to Dachau for the first time, where an exhibition of his pictures was organized.
