The Boka Vanguard is a semi-submersible ship owned by the Dutch heavy lift shipping company Dockwise with a length of 275 meters, a deck width of 70 meters and a transport capacity of 117,000 tons. The ship entered service as Dockwise Vanguard in 2013 and was the largest such transport ship at that time.
The ship differs from most other semi-submersible ships in its "bowless" design (the deck goes on one level up to the bow, so that loads can protrude over the front of the ship) and the arrangement of the bridge and crew quarters to the side of the actual hull, so that the actual deck width is almost completely available for loads. Only four narrow “casings” ensure that technically necessary connections to the water surface can be maintained even when half-submerged.
history
Planning and construction
The ship was planned and constructed jointly by the owner and the Finnish company Delta Marine. Because of the new design features, the design was u. a. submitted for review to the Det Norske Veritas classification society , which in turn consulted the IMO . Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan was contracted as a building yard after a tender to which ten shipyards had applied . The keel was laid in December 2011 and the name Dockwise Vanguard was christened on November 30, 2012. The ship's name was determined in a competition among Dockwise employees. The ship was completed on January 30, 2013.
renaming
In 2013 the shipping company was taken over by Royal Boskalis Westminster. The Dockwise Vanguard was then renamed Boka Vanguard in 2018 .
