Bokassa is a Norwegian rock band from Trondheim .

history

The band was founded in 2013 by singer and guitarist Jørn Kaarstad, bassist Eirik Angård and drummer Olav Dowkesund. All three musicians come from different parts of Norway and met in Trondheim. The band was named after Jean-Bédel Bokassa , who was dictator of the Central African Republic between 1966 and 1976 and then from 1975 until his overthrow, Emperor of the Central African Empire . According to singer Jørn Kaarstad, the fact that the band named themselves after Bokassa has already been misinterpreted.

“It's not always as beautiful as it is here in Europe, where everyone loves each other and so on. Often peace only works because other people are dirty or they have to toil for us. As in the Central African Republic under Bokassa. He supplied France with various goods, which in return supplied him with troops and weapons. His political opponents were also eliminated with the support of French troops. If you read through our texts a little more intensively, you will notice that we are addressing precisely these grievances in the world. "

- Jørn Kaarstad

The EP War on Everything was released just a year later . The single Make Music Great Again followed in 2016 , before the self-produced debut album Divide & Conquer was released in March 2017 . The British magazine Metal Hammer led the album on their list of the eleven best debut albums of 2017. With the album, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich became aware of Bokassa, who called the Norwegians "his new favorite band", and songs by Bokassa on his radio show played.

On June 21, 2019 the band released their second studio album Crimson Riders on the British record label MVKA . Was produced Crimson Riders by Yngve Andersen, the guitarist of the band Blood Command . Shortly before the recordings, bassist Eirik Angård left Bokassa and was replaced by Bård Linga. With Crimson Riders , the band made their first chart entry and the album reached number 20 on the Norwegian album charts. At the same time, Bokassa toured Europe with Ghost in the opening act for Metallica . In the autumn of 2019, a headlining tour through Europe with the support act Puppy followed . At the Norwegian music award Spellemannprisen , Bokasse was nominated in the category Best Newcomer .

style

Bokassa's music is a mixture of hardcore punk and stoner rock and describes its style as "stoner punk". Axl Rosenberg from the online magazine Metal Sucks compared the band to Kvelertak if they were more oriented towards punk and crossover than classic rock . Jörg Staude from the German magazine Rock Hard wrote in his review of the album Crimson Riders that “three visionaries interpret how metal can save itself into modern times without copying”. The music would be "new and really good".
