Puppy ( Engl. : Puppy ) is an English rock band from London .

history

The band was formed in 2014 when the band Polterghost broke up. Their guitarist Jock Norton and drummer Billy Howard Price met bassist Matthew Rickleton in a bar . Together they talked about the soundtrack to the movie Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey through Time and decided to start a new band. According to Jock Norton, the band name is an acronym that has not yet been deciphered. In the same year the band released their first songs Forever and The Great Beyond , before Puppy released the self-titled EP in September 2015 . At the same time the band played at the Reeperbahn Festival . Shortly after the EP was released, Matthew Rickleton left the band and was replaced by Will Michael. In the summer of 2016, Puppy played at the Download Festival before touring the UK with Sorority Noise .

In March 2017, Puppy were signed by Spinefarm Records . At the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2017, the band was nominated in the category Best New Band , but the award went to Venom Prison . This was followed by appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals , numerous tours in support of Creeper , Milk Teeth , CKY and Kvelertak , before Puppy released their second EP Vol. II in November 2017 . In early 2018, Puppy toured supporting Turbowolf and Grove Street Families before the band played at Bloodstock Open Air that summer . In autumn 2018, the band recorded their first studio album with producer Tom Dalgety , who has previously worked with Royal Blood or Ghost . The Goat was released on January 25, 2019. At the same time, Puppy toured Europe in support of Monster Magnet .

On October 25, 2019, the band released their third EP iii . A European tour followed in support of Bokassa .

style

Stefan Reuter from the German magazine Visions described Puppy as a band that unconcernedly brings together power pop , grunge , thrash and heavy metal . Christina Little by German magazine Metal Hammer wrote that Puppy " indie - pop and alternative with doomy heaviness and classic rock - Hooks weave". At Puppy, Weezer would meet Alice in Chains and Ozzy Osbourne . Wenig compared the singing of Jock Norton with that of the Ghost singer Tobias Forge . According to Allmusic's Neil Z. Yeung , Puppy provides muscular rock with cracking riffs inspired by the big four of Thrash Metal ( Metallica , Slayer , Megadeth and Anthrax ), listening to melodies from Weezer and the experimental flair of Smashing Pumpkins .

According to Jock Norton, the band's lyrics are "dark and sad," which contrasts with the lively music. Nevertheless, the band wants to be fun with their music and “celebrate a certain silliness”. In April 2019, the US online magazine Loudwire listed Puppy as one of the 16 bands currently defining rock music in the UK.
