history

According to legend, St. Wolfgang von Regensburg traveled from Regensburg to Prague in 973 for the inauguration of the first Prague bishop Thietmar . After spending the night on the mountain near Chudenice, he is said to have built a chapel there.

The oldest written information about the St. Wolfgang chapel dates from 1650. Franz Josef Czernin von und zu Chudenitz had a baroque pilgrimage church and a hermitage built in its place between 1722 and 1725 according to plans by Franz Maximilian Kaňka . The single-nave structure was 26 meters long, to the east of the onion dome, the rectangular nave and the choir adjoined. Prokop Adalbert Czernin von und zu Chudenitz had the church built over a stone in 1772 that supposedly had the imprints of the feet and the crosier of St. Wolfgang contributed to build a chapel.

In the course of the Josephine reforms , the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang was closed in 1786. In the following years the church was looted and demolished. The dilapidated Church of St. Wolfgang was torn down in 1810 except for the torso of the tower and used as building material for stately stables. In 1829 Josef Dobrovský held a Slavic mass in the desolate church.

Eugen Karl Czernin von und zu Chudenitz had the church tower redesigned into a lookout tower by master mason Jan Kubát from Puschberg between 1844 and 1845, and he also received a new neo-Gothic roof construction with a lookout pavilion and five roof turrets, which were modeled on the Black Tower in Klatovy . In 1897 Jaromir Czernin von und zu Chudenitz had the St. Wolfgang Chapel next to the tower restored and redesigned.

St. Wolfgang Chapel

The chapel stands over the rock on which St. Wolfgang is said to have stayed the night. Healing properties are ascribed to the stone on which the bishop's footprints and a dent from his crosier are said to be. The altarpiece shows the blessing of Chudenice by St. Wolfgang and is the work of Franziska Countess Czernin von und zu Chudenitz.
