Sequence of events

Istanbul University Faculty of Humanities building

At around 8:40 a.m. local time (7:40 a.m. CEST ) , a car bomb exploded in a parked vehicle in front of Istanbul's Vezneciler subway station in the Fatih district , not far from the back of the Faculty of Humanities at Istanbul University and Beyazit Square when a police bus drove by during a changing of the guard.

Reactions

Shortly after the attack, a news blackout was imposed, as is common in Turkey in such cases. During the afternoon, the local security forces arrested four suspects who are said to have rented the vehicle in question.

In politics there were - without waiting for the investigative authorities to find out - various accusations. Turkish President Erdoğan blamed the banned Kurdish Workers' Party ( PKK) for the attack, which at the time no one had claimed responsibility for. The Turkish newspaper Güneş , which is close to the government, blamed Germany's policy on the Armenian question for the attack on the following day .
