Bongsiel ( Frisian : Bongsiil, Danish : Bongsil ) is a place in the district of North Frisia . It belongs to the municipality of Ockholm and is east of the Hauke-Haien-Koog .

geography

Bongsiel is a scattered settlement in Ockholmer Koog. The houses are in the marshland on mounds . The Bongsiel Canal takes in the water from the Lecker Au and Soholmer Au , passes a pumping station and leads southwest to the south of the Hauke-Haien-Koog. The New Bongsiel Canal branches north of the former port to the west and leads through the northern part of the Kooges to Schlüttsiel .

It is about two kilometers to the North Sea coast and two kilometers to the Ockholm municipality.

history

Around 1735, a North Sea port was built in Bongsiel, which was to serve the movement of goods between the Netherlands and Flensburg . Due to the swampy hinterland, the Sielhafen quickly lost its importance. However, it remained the closest mainland port for several Halligen , including Hooge . Ships from Bongsiel ran there until 1959. In the course of the dike in the area to the west of Bongsiel and the establishment of the Hauke-Haien-Koog, the port was relocated to Schlüttsiel.

The "Gaststätte Bongsiel - Dat swarte Peerd" existed from 1902 as an inn. The inn has been closed since a fire in May 2016. Numerous well-known painters, including Emil Nolde , lived here and left an extensive collection of pictures. In 1979 the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt met there with representatives of the North Frisians for political talks.

Economy and Transport

There are tourist facilities in Bongsiel. Agriculture is also practiced. The county road 72 leads in north-south direction through the place.
