Boniface II of Lucca (* 788 ; † 847 ; Italian Bonifacio ) was Margrave of Tuscia (Tuscia) and Prefect of Corsica from 828 to 834 .

Life

The year of birth and death of Boniface are not considered to be fully established. The year 800 is given as the year of birth and 846 as the year of death.

The origins of the House of Boniface were in Bavaria . Boniface II was the son of Boniface I of Lucca and succeeded him as Count of Lucca. Lothar I , Roman Emperor and King of Italy appointed Boniface Margrave of Tuscia ( Italian Toscana ) and Prefect of Corsica in 828 , which he successfully defended against the attacks of the Saracens in 833 . The town of Calcosalto on the southern tip of Corsica then took his name in his honor: Bonifacio ( Corsican : Bunifaziu ).

After Boniface had sided with Emperor Ludwig I , the successor of Charlemagne , in 833 , he was deposed as Margrave of Tuscia by his son Lothar I. In the following year, Bonifatius campaigned for the release of Empress Judith , thus falling out further with Lothar I and having to go into exile . He spent the years 836–838 in Germany and later in France.

Bertha is given as his wife. His son Adalbert followed him from 846 as the next but one Margrave of Tuscia.
