Bordj Badji Mokhtar ( Arabic برج باجي مختار, DMG Burǧ Bāǧī Muḫtār , Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴱⵓⵔⴵ ⴱⴰⴵⵉ ⵎⵓⵅⵜⴰⵔ , abbreviated form Bordj Mokhtar or abbreviated BBM ) is a city in the south of the Algerian Sahara near the border with Mali . It is the capital of the province of the same name . Bordj refers to a small fort in Algeria .
history
The origins of Bordj Mokhtar go back to drilling a well for a storage area during the development of the route from Reggane to Mali in 1940. A French first lieutenant named Louis Le Prieur ran this company. A fort was later built nearby by the French army. During the colonial period , the place was called Bordj Le Prieur and was part of the Département de la Saoura . After independence , the name was changed to Bordj Badji Mokhtar in honor of the independence fighter Badji Mokhtar (1919–1955) .

The city is located at an altitude of 401 m in the Tanezrouft , a flat and largely uninhabited part of the Sahara.
