Boris Danilovich Korolev ( Russian Борис Данилович Королёв ., Scientific transliteration Boris Danilovic Korolëv * December 28, 1884 . Jul / 9. January  1885 greg. In Moscow ; † 18th June 1963 ) was a Russian-Soviet sculptor and graphic artist .

Life

Boris Koroljow was born in Moscow in 1884 as the son of a businessman.

From 1902 he studied mathematics and physics at Moscow University , from which he was expelled in 1905 for revolutionary activities. He then studied drawing in the studios of Fjodor Rerberg, Ulyanov and Ilja Maschkow and Maria Blok, where he created his first sculpture in 1908.

From 1910 he studied with Sergei Wolnuchin at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . At the same time he attended the departments of art history , archeology and philology at Moscow University . In 1913 he finished his training without a final exam.

Korolev traveled to England, Italy, Austria, Germany and France. In Paris he worked with Alexander Archipenko . In 1913-17 he gave drawing lessons at a school for the poor in Moscow. In 1916 he created an unrealized design for a memorial to the unknown soldier .

In 1917 he was a member of the Union of Russian Sculptors in Moscow. 1918-20 he was involved in the design of monumental propaganda works. 1918-19 he created a monument for Mikhail Bakunin . With Alexei Babitschew and Krivow he was a member of the committee for the dismantling of tsarist monuments.

In 1918 he became a teacher at the Second Free State Art Workshop (Swomas for short). There he headed the Monolit sculptor cooperative in 1919. The Sinskulptarch was founded in May 1919 with seven architects at the plastic sub-department of the ISO department of NARKOMPROS, the Sinskulptarch (later called Schiwskulptarch ). Koroljow worked for INChUK founded in 1920 , from which he left in autumn 1921.

In 1922 he exhibited at Mir Iskusstwa (World of Art). 1924, 1928 and 1930 at the Biennale in Venice . In 1928 he exhibited with the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AChRR) and in 1929 with the Society of Moscow Artists . In 1925 he designed the monument for the fighters of the revolution in Saratov . In 1926 he became a member of the Society of Russian Sculptors ORS and participated in its exhibitions. 1929-30 he taught at the Institute for Proletarian Visual and Performing Arts in Leningrad . 1930–33 he took part in the architectural competition for the Palace of the Soviets . In 1933 he created designs for a Lenin monument in Tashkent , which was demolished in 1991.

In 1958 a solo exhibition of his works was held in Moscow. Boris Korolev died in Moscow in 1963. He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
