Boris Vilkitsky ( Russian Борис Андреевич Вилькицкий ., Scientific transliteration Boris Andreevič Vil'kickij ; born March 22, jul. / 3. April 1885 greg. In Pulkovo , † 6. March 1961 in Brussels ) was an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy and Hydrograph .
Boris Wilkizki, son of geodesist and hydrographer Andrei Wilkizki , tried in the months of June to November 1913 during the hydrographic expedition of the Arctic Ocean with the ice-breaking cargo ships Taimyr and Waigatsch to force the northeast passage from Vladivostok to Arkhangelsk . Wilkizki, however, failed in the ice off Cape Chelyuskin . The strait there between the Taimyr peninsula and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago was named after Boris Wilkizki Wilkizkistraße .
However, he succeeded in discovering the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, some of whose eastern coasts he mapped. After the October Revolution he fought on the side of the White Army against the Bolsheviks . He was a member of the High Command of the Northern Territories and was appointed Rear Admiral in 1919. From February 19 to 21, 1920, he led the relief of the Northern Army from Arkhangelsk to Norway. He initially stayed in Norway and later moved to England and finally to Belgium, where he died in 1961.
