Charnwood is an administrative district with borough status in the county of Leicestershire in England , named after the Charnwood Forest . The administrative seat is the city of Loughborough . Other important places are Anstey , Barrow upon Soar , Birstall , Hathern , Mountsorrel , Rothley , Shepshed , Sileby , Syston , Thurmaston and Wymeswold .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Municipal Borough of Loughborough, the Urban District Shepshed and the Rural District Barrow upon Soar. At first it had the status of a district , but was raised to a borough on May 15, 1974.
