The São João Baptista (German: St. John the Baptist), commonly known as Botafogo , was a Portuguese galleons - warship , which was in the 16th century to 1534, built and as the largest and most powerful warship of the time was.

This ship could mean with 200 cannons larger caliber or 366 cannons and smaller bronze - guns are armed. Because of this, it came to be known as Botafogo (German fire eater ).

history

The botafogo was used in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean , where it became famous during the conquest of Tunis (1535) . In this battle the Botafogo was defeated by Infant Ludwig of Portugal, Duke of Beja , brother of Johann III. and brother-in-law of Charles V , in command.

According to historians, it was the battering ram of Botafogo , the chains of La Goulette destroyed, which the harbor of Tunis protected, and allowed the allied Christian fleet to reach the city and conquer.

The Galleon Botafogo is the origin of the name of the famous Botafogo district in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil .

A crew member named João de Sousa Pereira, a nobleman from the city of Elvas , became famous for being in charge of the ship's artillery. He also got the nickname "Botafogo", which he added to his family name . He later went to the Portuguese colony of Brazil and fought against the French and the local Tupi Indians. As a reward, the Portuguese crown gave him some areas that are now known as the Botafogo area.
