Bouchard I. de Marly
Bouchard I. de Marly († September 13, 1226 before Avignon ) was a French knight and crusader and lord of Marly and Saissac .
Life
Bouchard was a son of Mathieu I. de Marly and Mathilde de Garlande. On his father's side, he came from the widely ramified Montmorency family , which is why he is also called Bouchard de Montmorency-Marly . His father died in 1204 while conquering Constantinople during the fourth crusade , after which Bouchard inherited the castle and rule of Marly .
Bouchard took part in the Albigensian Crusade to the Languedoc region of southern France . After the capture of Carcassonne in 1209, he besieged the three castles of Lastours , but was captured by their defender, Pierre Roger de Cabaret . Only after two years was Bouchard released and the castles handed over after he was ready to make concessions to the enemy in the surrender negotiations. 1211 he fought against Toulouse and Castelnaudary and was the leader of the crusade, Simon IV. De Montfort , with the castle Saissac invested . On September 12, 1213 he was a troop leader in the victorious battle of Muret .
Bouchard seemed to have considered permanent settlement in Languedoc, because he married his sister to the Vice Count Aimery III. from Narbonne. However, the death of Simon de Montfort in 1218 before Toulouse collapsed the rule of the Crusaders within a few years. Then Bouchard sat down with King Louis VIII of France for the implementation of a new crusade, which was also decided in 1225. Bouchard moved south again with the army under the leadership of the king in 1226. During the siege of Avignon he fell ill with widespread dysentery and died of it. He was buried in Port Royal des Champs .
Marriage and offspring
Bouchard was married to Mathilde de Châteaufort († 1267), a daughter of Garce de Poissy and Constance de Courtenay . Via her mother she was a descendant of King Ludwig VI. of France . The couple had four children:
- Thibaud the Saint († 1247), Abbot of Vaux-de-Cernay
- Pierre († September 4, 1240), Lord of Marly
- Bouchard II († January 1, 1250), Lord of Marly
- Mathieu († 1234 in Palestine)
- Mabile, ∞ Guillaume Etendard, Marshal Charles of Anjou in Sicily
