Life

Officer and economic manager

After attending the higher middle school in 1939, Trip began training as an officer in the mounted artillery and was then between 1942 and 1945 in a concrete slab factory in Eembrugge belonging to the Bruynzeel group , of which he was authorized signatory from December 18, 1945 to February 16, 1949. This activity was however interrupted between 1946 and 1949 by his activity as a lieutenant in the army intelligence service in the Dutch East Indies .

After his return to the Netherlands, Trip was managing director of the factory for fragrances and flavors Polak en Schwartz in Zaandam between 1949 and 1958 , which was most recently part of IFF ( International Flavors & Fragrances ) in New York City . He also completed a degree in political and social sciences at the University of Amsterdam, which he graduated in 1951. In 1958 he became chairman of the board of the Dutch branch of the IFF and in 1972 of the European branch of the IFF.

In addition, he was from September 1, 1972 to May 11, 1973 Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht .

Minister and Senator

Trip was originally a member of the Katholieke Volkspartij KVP. He resigned from this, however, after the overthrow of the government of Prime Minister Jo Cals by the then CIP parliamentary group chairman Norbert Schmelzer , known as Nacht van Schmelzer (October 13/14, 1966) . In 1968 he joined the newly founded Politieke Partij Radical PPR.

On May 11, 1973 he was appointed by Prime Minister Joop den Uyl as a minister without portfolio with responsibility for science matters in his cabinet and was thus science minister until December 29, 1977 (Minister voor Wetenschapsbeleid) . In 1972 he had previously refused to accept a position in the Uyls' shadow cabinet. As Minister of Science, he created a major realignment of Dutch science policy. In addition, together with the then Minister for Culture, Leisure and Community Work Harry van Doorn, he refused to graduate from the Oosterschelde, which they succeeded in doing until the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier was put into operation in 1986.

Shortly before he left the cabinet, Trip became a member of the First Chamber of the States General on September 20, 1977, and was thus a senator until June 10, 1981. On April 11, 1978, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion for his longstanding services .

Most recently, Trip was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University Hospital of the University of Amsterdam from 1982 until his death on January 26, 1990.
