The Brüder Schlau GmbH & Co. KG is a German trading group specializing in home textiles and floor coverings . The group includes the specialist retail chain Hammer with over 200 branches in Germany (2017) as well as the craft markets operating under the name Schlau Wholesale . Around 69 percent of sales are achieved in retail . The company's headquarters are in the East Westphalian city ​​of Porta Westfalica .

history

In 1921 the brothers Theodor and Wilhelm Schlau founded a paint wholesaler in Minden . At the end of the 1950s, the range was expanded and the sales area expanded beyond the region.

During the DIY store boom in the 1970s, Brothers Schlau entered the retail sector and founded the specialist retail chain Hammer. The first branches were opened in 1976 in Bremerhaven and Lübbecke .

Since the opening of the 100th branch in 1996, the Hammer specialist stores have been operated in a franchising process.

In September 2015, Schlau announced that it would take over Carpet und Tapeten Markt GmbH , or Tep + Tap for short , based in Bremen in October of the same year .

In December 2015, the wholesale division of the Brüder Schlau group took over the Steffel group of companies headed by Frank Steffel and thus a flooring wholesaler with national distribution and a sales volume of 77 million euros. The Brüder Schlau group of companies achieved sales of 777.4 million euros in wholesale and retail in the past 2017 financial year. It currently employs more than 6,400 people.

In 2016, the group achieved sales of around 763.8 million euros with 5901 employees, of which around 68 percent were achieved in retail and around 32 percent in wholesale. Hammer can be found today (2017) at over 200 retail locations.

Products

The product groups with the largest share of sales in 2017 were floor coverings (34%) and curtains (21%) in retail, floor coverings (46%) and paints / tools (48%) in wholesale.

At the end of 2017, the group operated over 241 retail stores, 7 franchise stores and 63 wholesale stores.
