Bradford is a census-designated place (CDP) and historic district in the city of Westerly in Washington County , Rhode Island , United States . It is located in southwest Rhode Island about ten kilometers north of the Atlantic coast , about halfway between New Haven and Providence . Bradford was named after Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire , England .

Bradford consists of a settlement around the intersection of State Routes 91 and 216, directly south of the Pawcatuck River , which flows into the Atlantic about ten kilometers southeast. The settlement area is surrounded by forest and is at an average height of 12 m above sea level. The area of ​​the CDP is 4.9 km².

Bradford is connected to Interstate 95 by State Route 216 , which runs about ten kilometers to the north and connects New Haven to the southwest with Providence to the northeast. A route of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad runs through the place, but there is no stop on site.

The Bradford Village Historic District, with buildings dating from 1732, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under number 96000573 .

Population and economy

The population was 1,497 at the 2000 census . 96% of them were white , the remaining share was spread over several races. The per capita income was $ 14,004, with just over 13% of the population living below the poverty line.

The largest local employer is the Bradford Dyeing Association (BDA), which has been based there for almost a hundred years and makes army uniforms. Due to the environmental pollution caused by the plant, a citizens' initiative was formed which, together with various environmental organizations, filed a lawsuit. The company committed to installing better cleaning equipment, building taller chimneys and ensuring better control of their sedimentation tanks .
