Coronatus is a symphonic metal - band from Ludwigsburg , Germany .

history

Coronatus was founded in 1999 by Georgios Grigoriadis and Mats Kurth as a project. The single Von Engeln was only recorded with musician friends in 2002 and several concerts were played across Germany in 2003.

At the end of 2004 the band formed under Mats Kurth after a few line-up changes and the departure of Georgios Grigoriadis, again with a few guest musicians. A new singer was sought in a casting. Since the band could not decide on a candidate, they decided to play a concert with both singers, Carmen R. Schäfer and Verena Schock. It was agreed to keep both singers.

At the beginning of 2005 Viola Schuch filled the position of the second singer. Fabian Merkt supported the band on the keyboard from the beginning of 2006 .

In the same year the song My Rose Desire was released on a sampler of the Hungarian Metal Hammer , after which the band played at the Gothica V festival . Since then, Coronatus has had a special relationship with her Hungarian fans and played several times in Hungary in the following years . The performance on January 18, 2008 in the Petöfi Hall, Budapest , in the opening act for Within Temptation and Ideas was a great success .

With the support of Stefan Häfele ( guitar ) and Wolle Nillies ( bass ), Coronatus went into the studio in 2006 to record the album Lux Noctis . In 2007 Viola Schuch left the band and was replaced by Ada Flechtner. Joachim Lang joined the group in the same year as a guitarist .

Chriz DiAnno was the bass player for Coronatus back in 2003. From 2005 to 2006 he rejoined the band, but they had to record the album Lux Noctis without him. From 2007 to 2009 he was a permanent member of the band again, but left the band due to internal differences.

On September 18, 2009, Coronatus announced on their homepage that, after separating from Chriz diAnno, they had signed Todd Goldfinger from New York as bassist and Iranian Aria Keramati Noori as second guitarist. Shortly afterwards, on November 2nd, 2009, you could read that Ada Flechtner had left the band and Lisa Lasch took over the part of rocking vocals from then on.

On December 18, 2009, the band's next album was released, called Fabula Magna .

Lisa Lasch left the band in early 2010. Since then, Ada Flechtner has replaced her at the concerts. On May 12, 2010 Coronatus canceled all announced concerts at short notice and Carmen R. Lorch could no longer perform due to the advanced pregnancy. Todd Goldfinger also left the band in 2010.

At the end of June Natalia Kempin was announced as the new singer on the band's website. She should take over the classic parts that were previously sung by Carmen R. Lorch. On June 21, 2010, the band announced that a second singer had also been found. Her name is Mareike Makosch. Since June 2010, Dirk R. Baur has been a permanent bassist in the troupe again. The band also announced that they are now back to songwriting for the next album.

In February 2011, Coronatus and Kempin separated; at the same time, Coronatus announced a tour of Germany with Haggard, which will be completed with various guest singers. The tour was played with Ada Flechtner on soprano and Mareike Makosch. Guest venues were u. a. Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Hamburg. After the tour, the decision was made to continue with this line-up and also to record the upcoming album.

In August 2011 Coronatus went to the recording studio to begin work on the album Terra Incognita . The album was again produced and recorded in Klangschmiede E in Mellrichstadt.

The fifth album Recreatio Carminis was released in October 2013. Carmen R. Lorch is represented again, so that Coronatus now present itself with three singers. Ally Storch also appears as a guest musician .

A good year later, the next album called Cantus Lucidus was released , which again followed in December 2015 Raben im Herz . In addition, Susanne Bachmann joined the band as the new bass player in 2015, even if she cannot yet be heard on the bass on the CD Raben im Herz.

Style and reception

The texts of Coronatus are written in German, English, Latin and since Raben im Herz also Gaelic. The songs deal with life , interpersonal relationships , religion and death . Coronatus' style of music is melodic, rhythmically pronounced symphonic metal with influences from folk metal . The vocals are shared by two singers, one of whom sings head voices and operatic (Carmen Lorch), the other sings chest voices and rock (Anny Maleyes).

The reviews of the songs by Coronatus are mixed: The singing with two different female voices is praised, which sets Coronatus apart from other bands of this genre. However, the relative lack of fresh ideas in songwriting and interpretation as well as the significantly lower depth of the pieces compared to similar bands such as Nightwish or Epica is often criticized .

With the album Raben im Herz , however, the band has further developed their style. The songs have a more orchestral character.
