Bocydium globulare is a Schnabelkerf (Hemiptera) from the family of the humpback chirps (Membracidae) that occursin South America. Bocydium globulare is probably the best known species of the genus Bocydium . The species of this genus are characterized by protrusions on the back ( pronotum ) with a particularly striking shape.
features
Bocydium globulare reaches a length of about six to seven millimeters. The body is dark brown in color, the legs are yellow. The forewings are long, transparent and provided with distinct dark veins. The thickenings pointing upwards from the notum are very noticeable . These consist of two small balls pointing to the front and two to the sides and also a sword-like spike that runs parallel to the body. The spherical thickenings are equipped with lots of thin dark hair. The function and meaning of the conspicuous excesses has yet to be clarified.
The model maker Alfred Keller made a model of Bocydium globulare on a scale of 180: 1 in which the features are reproduced in detail. The model is in the Museum of Natural History in Berlin .
Occurrence
Bocydium globulare occurs in Brazil, French Guyana, Republic of Guyana, Suriname, and Peru. Earlier reports, according to which this species should also occur in Costa Rica, are probably incorrect, but rather the species Bocydium mae, which was newly described in 2017 .
Way of life
Bocydium globulare chirps live individually. They like to stay a few meters above the ground on the underside of leaves where they suckle. Preferred host plants are Miconia species. At night they appear on artificial light sources . Lifestyle details have yet to be researched.
