Entrance to the brewery

The brewery Schloss Eggenberg is since 1681 existing brewery in Vorchdorf ( Upper Austria / District Gmunden ) in Traunviertel . With a beer output of 160,000 hectoliters, it is the largest private brewery in Upper Austria.

history

The brewery is located in Eggenberg Castle , which was probably built in 971. The namesake of the castle and thus of the brewery is the Eggenberg family (1274-1395), not to be confused with the later Styrian noble family of Eggenberg , who only built the brewery of the same name in Krumau in 1625 . There is evidence that beer has been brewed in Schloss Eggenberg since the 14th century. In 1681 Michael Weismann started the commercial brewery. The brewery has been owned by the Forstinger / Stöhr family since 1803 and the castle since 1811 .

beers

Schloss Eggenberg has long established itself as a specialty brewery in order to stand out from the mono-variety strategy of international brewing groups. The range now includes 16 different types, including bock beer specialties such as the Urbock 23 ° and the Samichlaus beer . At the World Beer Cup 2012 in San Diego , the 2004 vintage Samichlaus was awarded a gold medal in the “Aged Beers” category.
