The brown-bellied amazily reaches a size of 9 centimeters. The male has a straight, medium-sized bill with a flesh-red base on the lower beak . The top is bronze green. distribution and habitat

The brown-bellied amazilie is endemic on the slopes of the Serranía de San Lucas and in the east of northern central Colombia. It was found only once on the eastern slope of the Serranía de San Lucas in 1947; all recent observations come from the western slope in the valleys of Sagamosa and Lebrija and from Soatá , Boyacá and Santander in the east. The brown-bellied amazily inhabits canyons with bush vegetation and the edges of mountain moist forests at altitudes of 850 to 1500 m, rarely up to 2200 m. She was observed at the Serranía de San Lucas at a height of 120 m.

Way of life

The brown-bellied amazily feeds on the nectar of various flowers, including the genera Salvia and Trichanthera . Small arthropods enrich the food supply. The breeding season is from August to December. The clutch consists of two eggs that are incubated by the female.

status

BirdLife International estimates the population of the brown-bellied amazil to be between 1000 and 2500 specimens. The brown-bellied amazilie lives in a restricted range that is endangered by overgrazing and slash-and- burn . Most of the eastern slope of the Serranía de San Lucas was settled in 1996 and changed through agricultural use and coca cultivation. Furthermore, their living space is threatened by immigration, an oil pipeline and the mining industry. The brown-bellied amazily is listed in Appendix II of the CITES agreement.

Etymology and history of research

John Gould described the brown-bellied parrot under the name Amazilius castaneiventris . The type specimen came from Santafé de Bogotá and was made available to him from the collection of a Mr. Mark. Later the species was assigned to the genus Amazilia . This name comes from a novel by Jean-François Marmontel , who reported in Les Incas, Ou La Destruction De L'Empire Du Pérou, about an Inca heroine named Amazili. "Castaneiventris" is a Latin word from "castaneus" for "chestnut brown" and "venter, ventris" for "belly".
