features

Young fish are black, adults have a brown camouflage pattern. Characteristic of the species is the concave shape of the head sides behind the eyes when viewed from above, which are shaped by pits. A brown band on the cheeks is also typical of the species. The brown cheek flat head becomes half a meter long. Like all members of the family, it is elongated, has a large flat head and a large mouth. But the mouth ends in front of the eye. The two front gill spines are short and unequal in length. There are two more spines under the eyes. They have ten to twelve short papillae above the eyes, some of which are branched, others unbranched.

Fin formula : dorsal IX-X / 11, anal 11

Way of life

Brown-cheeked flatheads are predatory fish that, often buried in the sand, lurk for smaller fish, crustaceans , cephalopods and bristle worms . Their reproductive biology is unknown.
