The house Braunschweiger Straße 5 is a listed residential building in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located on the east side of Braunschweiger Strasse in Magdeburg's Sudenburg district . The building is a single monument in the Braunschweiger Straße 1–10, 98–108 monument area . The building, which is also listed, Braunschweiger Straße 6 , borders to the north and Braunschweiger Straße 4 to the south .

Architecture and history

The four-story house was built in 1885 for the master coppersmith M. Seidemann , who also lived here and ran his workshop on the farm, according to plans by Max Behrendt . The facade of the representatively designed brick building is designed in the neo-renaissance style and cites Mannerist forms of the French Renaissance of the 16th and early 17th centuries. The facade is characterized by rusticated cuboids of different shapes, which are particularly noticeable on pilasters and columns. The lateral axes of the facade are emphasized as risalits and crowned with small gables. Originally the gables were decorated with obelisks , but these are no longer there.

The residential building is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 81930 in the monument register for Magdeburg .

As part of the Wilhelminian style street, the building is considered to be significant in terms of urban planning and has one of the most elaborate facade designs of the construction period in Magdeburg. It is also a socio-historical example of the mixed use of apartments and businesses in the early days.
