Breckland is a district in the county of Norfolk in England . The name is derived from the Breckland landscape, a sandy heather overgrown with bushes in southern Norfolk and northern Suffolk . The administrative seat is Dereham ; other important places are Attleborough , Swaffham , Thetford and Watton .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of Borough Thetford, the urban districts of East Dereham and Swaffham and the rural districts of Wayland, Mitford and Launditch and Swaffham.
