Brentanobad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brentanobad is the largest outdoor swimming pool in Frankfurt am Main and is located in the Rödelheim district .

Swimming pool and equipment

The area east of the Nidda - formerly part of the neighboring Brentanopark - has retained its park-like character, which is mainly determined by the old trees and spacious lawns.

The swimming pool has the shape of an elongated segment of a circle, which is cut off at both ends. The pool has a length of 220 meters, a maximum width of 50 meters and, with a water surface of 11,000 square meters, is the largest pool in Germany. The length of the swimming area is 125 m.

Since the swimming pool is unheated, the beginning and end of the outdoor swimming season are variable and depend on the weather. As a rule, swimming starts around May 1st and ends around August 31st. The area's capacity is barely exhausted, even on peak days with almost 10,000 visitors.

In addition to a large lawn for sunbathing, there is a paddling pool and children's playground, three beach volleyball fields and an open-air cinema. The Brentanobad is managed by a kiosk with a beer garden. If there are good visitors, there is often an ice cream van on the premises. In addition, the local group Frankfurt-Mitte of the DLRG is based in the Brentanobad.

Location and infrastructure

The Brentanobad area is bordered by the Nidda to the west, by Ludwig-Landmann-Strasse to the east and by Rödelheimer Parkweg to the southwest, with the Brentanobad stadium adjacent to it . The south-eastern border of the area is the roller-skating rink, which lies between the Brentano Park and the swimming pool area.

To the public transport network the swimming pool with the northern stations Fischstein and Hausener way of the rail line U7 reach. At the same time, bus line 34 runs there , whose stations Parkweg and Sternbrücke are a similar distance to the south of the spa.

To the north of the site there is a large paid car park, which is also regularly used for other purposes - such as for events in the nearby bread factory or the open-air cinema. The car park can be reached from the A 66 via the Ludwig-Landmann-Straße junction in the immediate vicinity. Due to the high demand for parking spaces, it is planned to build a parking garage in its place, but this is controversial due to its location in the Frankfurt green belt .

history

After the city of Frankfurt acquired the park area in 1926, the Brentanobad was built in 1928 as a natural river swimming pool in an oxbow lake of the Nidda and opened in 1930.

Due to the sinking water quality of the Nidda, the swimming pool was separated from the river in the course of the renovation of all Frankfurt beach baths in the 1960s. The reopening after being converted into a stone-lined pool took place on May 14, 1966.

A special feature of the swimming pool was that until 2005 the pool did not have a water connection to the supply network. The water was taken from hydrants of the fire water supply and fed into the basin via hose lines. The cleaning and filling of the pool at the beginning of the outdoor swimming season took five days and was done on a voluntary basis by the local volunteer fire departments.

With the dissolution of the sports and bathing department of the city of Frankfurt, the Brentanobad was transferred to “BäderBetriebe Frankfurt GmbH” ( BBF for short ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Stadtwerke Frankfurt am Main, in 2003 . At that time, the entire swimming pool was in dire need of renovation. Every season, up to 30,000 cubic meters of chlorinated water seeped away underground. Since the heated outdoor swimming pool in Hausen is in the immediate vicinity , the condition of which was also no better, the BBF planned to close one of the two pools.

As a result, a citizens' initiative was founded to preserve the swimming pool. In the meantime, there was talk of giving the bathroom into private hands. In winter 2005/2006, the swimming pool was finally renovated, but not the changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The entire water technology was renewed, the natural stone slopes of the pool edges were replaced by smooth slopes and the whole pool was lined with a plastic sheet. The low hedge planting on the edge of the pool was replaced by a surrounding overflow and paving that reached to the edge of the pool. The water area increased from 8,300 to 11,000 square meters. The shape of the pelvis and the pelvic profile with its slight increase in depth were retained. The reopening took place on the Wäldchestag (May 29) 2006.
