Bresnik (also written Breznik , Bulgarian Брезник ) is a city in western Bulgaria . The city is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name in the Pernik Oblast . Bresnik is located south of the Sofia plain and the Zawal Mountains , approx. 40 km west of the Bulgarian capital Sofia . Nearby are the cities of Tran , Slivnitsa and Pernik .

history
During the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885/86 the city was occupied by Serbian troops from the Šumadija Division, which took up positions on the surrounding hills. In the decisive battle of Slivnitsa , Bresnik and the surrounding area became a theater of war. On November 8th, July / November 20, 1885 greg. the village was recaptured.
The city has given its name to Breznik Heights , a mountain range on Greenwich Island in Antarctica , since 2005 .
Attractions
Bresnik and the surrounding region are rich in archaeological finds from all ages. The region has been populated since ancient times. A Tschitalischte was founded here in 1870 .
