Brian Randolph Greene (born February 9, 1963 in New York City ) is an American mathematician and theoretical physicist who conducts research in the field of string theory .

Life

Greene attended Stuyvesant High School in New York and studied from 1980 at Harvard University . He received his PhD from Oxford University in 1987 with a Rhodes Fellowship and the work Superstrings: Topology, Geometry and Phenomenology and Astrophysical Implications of Supersymmetric Models . He was a member of the physics faculty at Cornell University from 1990 to 1996 , where he became a professor in 1995. From 1993 to 1995 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . Since 1996 he has been Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University in New York . At Columbia, Greene is the vice director of the University Institute of Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics (ISCAP).

Greene is married to Tracy Day.

Brian Greene is one of the founders of mirror symmetry .

With David R. Morrison , Paul Aspinwall, and Andrew Strominger , he showed that the topology of Calabi-Yau manifolds (which occur in string theory) can change at the Conifold point (a singular point in the modulus space ).

He became known to the general public through his books The Elegant Universe and The Stuff of which the Cosmos is Made.

In the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory , he has a guest appearance in the twentieth episode of the fourth season. There he plays himself in a presentation of his book The Hidden Reality .
