Brian Keith Shaw (born March 22, 1966 in Oakland , California , United States ) is a retired American basketball player and coach who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 14 years .
Career
As early as 1986, Shaw took part in the 1986 World Basketball Championship as a member of the US national team and won gold with future NBA players such as David Robinson , Steve Kerr , Sean Elliott and Kenny Smith . Shaw was selected by the Boston Celtics in the 1988 NBA Draft and initially signed for one year.
After a stint at Pallacanestro Virtus Roma , he returned to the Celtics in 1990 after the contract between Shaw and Rome was declared invalid in a legal dispute. Shaw played for various NBA clubs over the next several years. In 1995 he reached the NBA final with the Orlando Magic , where the Magic were subject to the Houston Rockets .
Shaw had his most successful time between 2000 and 2002 with the Los Angeles Lakers , where he celebrated three NBA championships alongside Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant . In 2003 he resigned.
Coaching career
Shaw worked after his career as an assistant coach with the Lakers under Phil Jackson . In this position he won the NBA championship again in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 he moved to the Indiana Pacers in the same position . In 2013 he got his first head coaching position with the Denver Nuggets .
After a year and a half unsuccessful, Shaw was released early on March 3, 2015 by the Nuggets. In May 2016 it was announced that Shaw was returning to the Lakers in the role of assistant coach to assist future head coach Luke Walton .
