The Bridger Wilderness [ bɹɪdʒɚ ˈwɪldənɪs ] is a protected area of the type of a wilderness area in the US state of Wyoming . It is located in the Rocky Mountains on the west flank of the Wind River Range . The area is named after Jim Bridger , a trapper and explorer who became the first white man to explore parts of the Rocky Mountains in the 1820s. The wilderness area is part of the Bridger-Teton National Forest , one by the United States Forest Service managed National Forest .

The wilderness area stretching from northwest to southeast has an area of ​​over 1700 square kilometers (established in 1964 with over 1500 km², expanded by almost 150 km² in 1984). On the east side it is bounded by the continental divide . In the northeast, across the ridge, lies the Fitzpatrick Wilderness , in the southeast the Popo Agie Wilderness . Between these, the Bridger Wilderness borders the Wind River Reservation , an Indian reservation of the Eastern Shoshone and Arapaho .

The Bridger Wilderness encompasses one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the United States . Seven of the ten largest glaciers in the United States outside of Alaska , more than 2,300 mountain lakes, and on the border of the wilderness are Gannett Peak , Wyoming's highest mountain at 4207 m. Other peaks over 4000 m are Downs Mountain (4096 m) and Wind River Peak (4021 m). The Green River rises in the area , and with its tributaries it drains the entire wilderness.

Black bears , grizzly bears , wolves , elk and other large mammals live in the wild . Bald eagles and golden eagles are the largest birds.

As in all wilderness areas, there is no traffic or tourist infrastructure. The area is not touched or crossed by any road, but around 1000 km of paths are rudimentary maintained. The use of vehicles of all kinds, including mountain bikes, is prohibited. Permitted uses are trekking and trail riding in small groups as well as fishing and hunting within the framework of legal regulations .
