The Fitzpatrick Wilderness [ fɪtsˌpætɹɪk ˈwɪldənɪs ] is a protected area of the type of a Wilderness Area in the US state of Wyoming . It is located in the Rocky Mountains on the east flank of the Wind River Range . The area is by Thomas Fitzpatrick named, a trapper and explorer explored that belonged in the 1820s to the first white parts of the Rocky Mountains, in 1842, he served as scouts for John Charles Fremont active, the important first points of the mountain range surveyed . The wilderness area is part of the Shoshone National Forest , one by the United States Forest Service managed National Forest .
The wilderness has roughly the shape of an inverted triangle and an area of about 800 km². The eastern border runs exactly in a north-south direction, here joins the Wind River Reservation , an Indian reservation of the Eastern Shoshone and Arapaho . On the west side, the area is bounded by the ridge of the Wind River Range and the continental divide that runs there . Beyond the ridge is the Bridger Wilderness .

The east flank of the Wind River Range is more rugged than the west side. Therefore there are 44 small glaciers , 60 lakes and countless small streams and rivers in the area that flow into the Wind River . On the border of the wilderness are Gannett Peak , Wyoming's highest mountain at 4207 m, and Downs Mountain (4096 m).
As in all wilderness areas, there is no traffic or tourist infrastructure. The area is not touched or traversed by any road, but trails, including the usual route to Gannett Peak, are rudimentary. The use of all types of vehicles, including mountain bikes , is prohibited. Permitted uses are trekking and trail riding in small groups as well as fishing and hunting within the framework of legal regulations .
