Bridgewater is a small town in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania with 4045 inhabitants (as of 2016). It is located about 19 km north of Hobart city center , making it one of the northern suburbs of Tasmania's capital.
location
The city lies on the north bank of the Derwent River and belongs to the Local Government Area Brighton Municipality .
Transport links
Bridgewater is on the Midland Highway (N1), where the East Derwent Highway (B32) and Boyer Road (B10) meet it. The city is connected to Granton on the south bank by the Bridgewater Bridge , which gave the city its name, and the associated dam . For tourists coming from the north of the island, Bridgewater is the first suburb of the Hobart area.
In addition to the Midland Highway, there is also a railway line over the Bridgewater Bridge. There used to be a train station in the city that was used by commuters to Hobart.
Social
For the past few decades, Bridgewater has been one of the most deprived areas in the greater Hobart area from a socio-economic perspective. The household age is low, the number of unemployed high, as well as the proportion of the underclass and criminals. Contrary to this reputation, one can also find farms and industrial areas, single-family houses and apartment buildings in the urban area.
economy
In the Old Main Road , there are several shops, including restaurant chains such as McDonald's and The Roost , but the Cove Hill Shopping Center has for many years the main shopping center of Bridgewater. There you will find a supermarket, Kentucky Fried Chicken and many specialty shops. Recently there was also a shop for alcoholic beverages. In November 2007, a new shopping center, Greenpoint Plaza , opened on Greenpoint Road. There is a Woolworths supermarket, post office, alcoholic beverages shop and four other specialty shops. Bridgewater also has a petrol station, pub ( Derwent Tavern ) and a library.
schools
Bridgewater had four elementary schools ( Northern Suburbs Christian School (private), St. Paul's Primary School (Catholic), Greenpoint Primary School (state), and Bridgewater Primary School (state)). There is also a public secondary school, Bridgewater High School , which also has a school farm.
The two state primary schools were merged; the new school in Greenpoint is now called East Derwent Primary School .
The Tasmanian government has brought together the area's public schools as part of the Big Picture School Initiative to form the Jordan River Learning Federation . For example, twelve-level public schooling can be offered in which East Derwent Primary School, Bridgewater High School and a newly introduced higher education institution for the 11th and 12th grades work together.
