Brigitte Vasallo (born 1973 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish author, feminist and activist. Her main topics are Islamophobia , intersectionality , gender and racism . She advocates alternatives to monogamy .

Life

Brigitte Vasallo is the daughter of a Galician family who first immigrated to France and then to Catalonia . She identifies herself as " Xarnego ", even if not in the originally derogatory meaning of the word. She spent several years in Morocco and, according to her own account, was sensitized to ethnocentrism and cultural arrogance .

Vasallo regularly works as an author with various media such as eldiario.es, Catalunya Ràdio, Diagonal, La Directa or Pikara Magazine. She is keynote speaker on alternatives to monogamy at conferences in Portugal, Brazil and across Spain. She was a lecturer in the master's degree in “Gender and Communication” at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and in a program on racism at the University of Girona .

With PornoBurka she published her first novel in 2013, for which Juan Goytisolo wrote the foreword. In 2018 her book Pensamiento monógamo was published , a critical reflection on love, sex, monogamy and polyamory . Her works have appeared in the most important Spanish daily newspapers El Mundo and El País as well as u. a. discussed in public . Essays by Brigitte Vasallo are published in anthologies. Her articles have been translated into English, French, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese, and her books have been published in Spain, Argentina and Italy.

On the subject of polyamory she advised the international research project “Intimate - Citizenship, Care and Choice” at the University of Coimbra .

Positions

Vasallo's focus is on the one hand on the intersection of racism and misogyny , especially with regard to Muslim women. She criticizes " purplewashing " and " pinkwashing ". Feminism and LGBT rights are used to justify xenophobia .

Another focus is on alternative forms of relationships apart from monogamy . She doesn't see fidelity as a type of possession and love as a limited resource. However, it warns against the appropriation of polyamory by neoliberalism , whereby its power structures are passed on and people can be objectified , their bodies can be viewed as a consumable good.
