The British Mountaineering Council ( BMC ) ( German  British Mountaineering Association ) is the national representation for England and Wales , which is responsible for protecting the freedoms and promoting the interests of climbers , hikers and mountaineers , including ski mountaineers . The BMC has also been recognized by the government as the national governing body for competitive climbing.

The BMC has been a member of the UIAA since 1932 and a member of the EUMA since 2017 .

history

The organization was originally founded in 1944 at the suggestion of Geoffrey Winthrop Young , President of the Alpine Club .

The aim was to represent the interests of climbing clubs and primarily to maintain access for climbers to climb a mountain, cliff or even a cliff in England and Wales. Since 2017, the head office has been on Burton Road in West Didsbury, part of Manchester , England .

In 2018, members elected the organization's first female president, Lynn Robinson.

Founding members

The BMC started with 25 member organizations in the climbing and outdoor sectors

activity

The British Mountaineering Council supports its members in providing services and representation for: access and conservation, climbing walls, clubs and huts, competitive climbing, equipment advice, guides and maps, cultural heritage, internationality, safety and competence, youth and justice.

The organization offers two types of membership: association membership, for those people who are affiliated with the BMC through an association , and individual members.

In 2017, the BMC had a total of more than 75,000 members: 51,000 individual members, 24,000 association members, and 280 affiliated associations. Membership includes access to BMC travel insurance, discounts on the purchase of mountaineering equipment, technical advice and training, and four issues a year of the association's Summit magazine .

Summit magazine strives for broad coverage for all types of climbers, hikers and mountaineers. There are also regular reports on special topics that have little space in popular magazines. Summit is published four times a year in February, May, September and November. Individual members receive all issues, but clubs only receive the February issue. The circulation therefore fluctuates greatly, between around 40,000 copies in May, September and November and 75,000 copies in February. This makes the magazine the highest-circulation magazine in the UK mountaineering sector. In addition to the BMC's online shop, it is available locally in some British mountaineering centers, such as Plas y Brenin in Capel Curig .

The BMC publishes climbing guides for various climbing areas in Great Britain such as the Peak District and Lancashire .

To the reciprocal right to obtain, BMC members can complement a reciprocity ID ( Reciprocal Rights Card purchase).

Controversy over renaming the BMC

On July 25, 2016, the British Mountaineering Council announced its intention to rename itself Climb Britain based on the result of a consultation initiated by Sport England . The renaming process has been halted due to strong disagreement from members, further deliberations and heated online debates. Because of the chosen path of renaming without prior consultation of the members, the BMC executive committee was expressed suspicion at the annual general meeting in April 2017.

It has been announced that the Climb Britain brand will be used for other purposes within the BMC.
