The Tangaroa is a research vessel owned by the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research .
history
The ship was built in the early 1990s under hull number 142 on the Norwegian Mjellem & Karlsen Verft. The keel was laid in July 1990, the launch on December 17, 1990. The ship was completed in May 1991.
The ship is named after Tangaroa , the sea god in Māori mythology .
Technical data and equipment
The ship is powered by a Wärtsilä - diesel engine (type: 8R32D) with 2,999 kW power driven. The motor acts on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow and stern thruster with 600 or 800 kW power, as well as an electrically powered, extendable propeller pod with 800 kW power in the bow area . The ship has a dynamic positioning system (DP2).
For electricity generation, a driven by the main motor are Leroy-Somer - wave generator with 900 kVA apparent power and two Cummins -Dieselgeneratoren 1800 kW power. A Cummins harbor and emergency generator with 400 kVA apparent power was also installed.
The ship is equipped with various echo sounders for research and surveying tasks. It has a variety of lifting tools, including a rear boom , and winches for hauling nets and research equipment. A moon pool is also available for the deployment of research equipment. Various laboratories are set up on board. The laboratory capacities can be expanded with laboratory containers. There is space for three 20-foot containers on deck . The ship has various cold storage rooms.
There is space on board for 40 people, who can be accommodated in 22 single and nine double cabins. An infirmary is set up on board.
The ship can stay at sea for 60 days. The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice ( ice class 1C).
