Thompson took part in FIS races from December 2009 at the age of 15, initially in all disciplines at the start. A year later he made his debut in the Nor-Am Cup . In 2011 and 2012 he won a total of three FIS races, all in the slalom discipline . Gradually, however, it became clear that his strengths lie in the fast disciplines. After he was able to establish himself in the Nor-Am Cup in the 2013/14 season, his first appearance in the World Cup followed on November 29, 2014 : however, he did not finish on the downhill from Lake Louise . Two and a half weeks later, on December 14th, he stood for the first time on the podium in a Nor-Am race, the Super-G from Panorama . He achieved his first Nor-Am victory on February 19, 2015 in Nakiska , with which he won the Super-G discipline ranking of the 2014/15 season.
Thompson scored his first World Cup point on January 16, 2015 with 30th place in the combination on the Lauberhorn in Wengen . While he was able to classify himself in the points two more times in combinations in winter 2015/16, there were no countable results in winter 2016/17. On December 29, 2017, he surprised with eighth place in the combination of Bormio , his best World Cup result to date. This secured him participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
