Brookhaven is a city in Lincoln County , Mississippi , United States . The population at the 2000 census was 9,861. It is the seat of the county seat of Lincoln County.
history
The name Brookhaven was taken over by the city's founder, Samuel Jayne, in 1818 from the city of the same name in New York State .
On August 13, 1955, the black civil rights activist Lamar Smith was shot dead in broad daylight and in the street near the courthouse. Contemporary newspapers reported dozens of white witnesses, none of whom testified. In the trial against three white suspects, a jury consisting only of white men acquitted all of the accused.
