Originally a hunting and settlement area for the Blackfoot , white people began to settle in 1887. In 1904 so many white people lived in the area that a post office (still without a name) was opened. The settlement had until 1911 the status of a village ( English Village ). From 1911 to 2010 the community then had the status of a small town ( English Town ) before it received the current status of a city. With its population of 13,676 it was the third smallest of the cities in Alberta in 2011, only Wetaskiwin and Lacombe were smaller. However, there are also small town communities in Alberta that have more residents; B. Okotoks .

The community is accessible by various highways. In the northeast, Alberta Highway 1 , as part of the Trans-Canada Highway , passes the community. In north-south direction, the community is crossed by Alberta Highway 873 . The east-west running Alberta Highway 542 ends in Brooks at the junction with Highway 1. In the south-west of the city runs a railway line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Brooks Regional Aerodrome ( IATA code : none , ICAO : CYBP) is 3 NM (5.6 km) north-northwest of the city.
