Brookshire is a city in Waller County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is on US Highway 90 and 3960 km east-west trending Interstate 10 , in the south of Waller County, about 50 km west of Houston . It has a total area of 9.1 km 2 without any significant water surface.
history
Brookshire was incorporated as a city in 1946. It was named after Captain Nathan Brookshire, a member of Stephen F. Austin's 5th column in 1835. The first post office was opened in 1893 and the first newspaper, the Brookshire Times, was published a short time later. In 1920 the population had risen to 1250 and in 1980 it was 2244 inhabitants.

According to the 2000 census, 3,450 people in 1,138 households and 823 families lived here. The population density was 379.5 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 32.67% White, 38.20% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 26.09% other ethnic groups. About 2.06% were mixed race and 37.16% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,138 households, 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.5% of these were married couples living together. 21.2% were single mothers and 27.6% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.56.
32.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 11.7% 18 to 24, 30.6% 25 to 44, 17.3% 45 to 64, and 8.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,461 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,017. Males had a median income of $ 25,032 versus $ 18,674 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,235. 18.7% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.1% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.1% were 65 or older.
