In geology, a rupture zone is a strip of the earth's crust shaped by faults . There are different fracture zones, including:

  • Fault or fault zone on plates of the oceanic or continental crust, e.g. B. Rift Valley
  • Disturbance in the oceanic crust.
  • Zone that has open crevices, lava and cinder cones on the surface of the earth , for example volcanoes

Rupture zones can also be an indication of coming earthquakes, for example in the Ganges Delta.

causes

Areas in Germany

In Germany, in contrast to other areas on earth, there are no plate boundaries and Germany is not an earthquake region. However, there is seismic activity recorded daily . This is caused by fracture zones within the plate.

There are three very active areas in Germany:

  • Grabenbruch Oberrheingraben (part of the Mediterranean-Mjösen zone ): The cause of the activity is the plate movements from the south and west, which lead to pressure and tension within the crust, which discharge in light tremors.
  • Swabian Alb : In addition to volcanic activity, most seismic activities can be traced back to the tectonic processes in the south.
  • Vogtland: Here the cause is volcanic activity, here is the Finn-Gera-Jáchymov fault

Fracture zones in Europe

The Mediterranean-Mjösen zone stretches through large parts of Europe with several branches.

Fracture zones in America

The Puget Sound area has an extensive system of fault zones and other structures such as the Olympic-Wallowa lineament .
