The Bruggerloch is a bathing lake on the Rhine near Höchst in the Rhine Valley , Vorarlberg .

Location and history

The Bruggerloch is located on the Bruggerhorn , the tip of the Swiss national border, which was formed by the Old Rhine . Since the Rhine regulation in 1900/1923, the new lower course has continued in a straight line. Old maps show that the Bruggerloch was once in the middle of the Rhine. The Bruggerloch is located south of the Höchst district of Brugg . The lake is separated from Lustenau by the current course of the Rhine.

The lake itself was created as a quarry pond , which has now been largely renatured, and has about 3  hectares . The maximum depth is about seven meters. It is separated from the south-west neighboring Swiss bathing lake Bruggerhorn by a dam and fence.

nature

Despite its artificial origin, due to gravel dredging , the lake is a typical water body , in particular the siltation zone on the west side is made up of large reed. On the bank there are mainly birch and ash trees and a piece of gallery forest .

The lake and the surrounding area are listed in the Vorarlberg biotope inventory to an extent of 5.2 hectares as very close to nature (Inv.No. 21707), but are not placed under stricter nature protection because of their swimming use.

Endangered species include rough horn leaf ( Ceratophyllum demersum ), endangered species pointed sedge ( Carex gracilis ), iris ( Iris pseudacorus ) and swamp panicle ( Poa palustris ), and endangered species common frog spoon ( Alisma plantago- aquatica ), bladder sedge ( Carex vesicaria ), large swaths ( Glyceria maxima ), yellow pond rose ( Nuphar lutea ), green pond rush ( Schoenoplectus lacustris ) and mountain elm ( Ulmus glabra ).

use

The north bank is a bathing place, the Bruggerloch natural swimming pool.

The water temperature averages 23 ° C during the bathing season, but fluctuates between 16 and 28 ° C due to the small size of the body of water. The bathing area has a beach volleyball court and sanitary facilities. The Paradiesle restaurant (also known as Mani's Bar) and the community-owned Gasthaus Bruggerhorn are located on the lake .
