The bladder-sedge ( Carex vesicaria ), also called narrow-leaved bladder-sedge , is a species of the genus sedges ( Carex ) within the sour grass family (Cyperaceae). It is widespread in the northern hemisphere .

Vegetative characteristics

The bladder sedge is a partially evergreen , perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. It is bare everywhere and forms long subterranean runners . Its stem is sharp, triangular at the bottom, and mostly rough at the edges at the top.

The basal leaf sheaths are brown in color, partly purple and appear clearly fibrous when torn open. The ligules are acute-angled, delicate, membranous and translucent; sometimes these are provided with a fine red or brownish nerve network. The double-folded, grass-green leaves are about 4 to 8 millimeters wide and sharply keeled in color. The underside of the leaf is often a little darker and has a slight blue-green sheen. The upper side of the leaf, on the other hand, has a rather fresh green shimmer.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is in June. The bladder sedge is a varietal sedge. The inflorescence contains two to four male spikelets , which are at the tip, and one to three female spikelets, which are surmounted by the male. The female spikelets are four to ten times as long as they are wide and are only located in the upper half of the stem, the lower ones are often short-stalked. Their bracts are often short divorced. The light yellow-green colored tubes are about 8 millimeters long, strongly inflated, conical and appear crooked upright. They gradually narrow into the beak, which is provided with two spreading beak teeth. The tube always encloses three scars.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 74, 80, 82 or 86.

The bladder sedge is a helomorphic, scleromorphic hydrophyte and hemicryptophyte . It reproduces vegetatively with the help of its rhizome or its subterranean runners.

The pollination is carried by the wind ( anemophily ). Their buoyant fruits are spread through the water ( hydrochory ).

Occurrence

The bladder sedge is widespread in the northern hemisphere from Europe to Central Asia and in North America from Canada to the western United States.

It occurs frequently in all of Germany except for the alpine areas and the central German dry areas. It is a character species of the Caricetum vesicariae from the Magnocaricion association . In the Allgäu Alps, it only rises to an altitude of 900 meters.

It populates silting areas of standing water and slow-flowing rivers or streams. It thrives on occasionally flooded, damp to seeping, moderately alkaline and nutrient-rich mesotrophic peat mud soils.

It is nutrient-demanding and, according to Ellenberg, shows a moderately high nitrogen content in the soil.
