Brunei Museum

The Brunei Museum is the national museum of Brunei in Kota Batu near the capital Bandar Seri Begawan . The museum mainly shows exhibits of Islamic art from the historical period since the 16th century, as well as archaeological finds and ethnographic objects. It is the largest museum in Brunei.

In the beginning, from 1969, the museum was also the publisher of the Brunei Museum Journal , an academic journal that is now published annually.

location

The museum in Kota Batu is about 4.5 km east of downtown Bandar Seri Begawan on the coastal road. It stands on a hill with a picturesque view of the Brunei River .

history

The museum was originally located in the city center in Bandar Brunei (Bandar Seri Begawan) from 1965. The new location was created on a historical archaeological site. Construction began in 1968 and was completed in 1970. The official opening of the museum in the new premises was carried out on February 29, 1972 by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain . The area of ​​the museum, together with the surrounding park, covers 48 hectares.

exhibition

The museum has finely crafted carvings and objects from the Malay tradition, such as the sculpted tomb of Sultan Bolkiah , the ruler of the sultanate in the 15th century. The galleries of the museum are divided into sections for Islamic art, natural history, and for temporary exhibitions. The historical exhibitions cover the history of Southeast Asia with a special focus on the links between Brunei and the Spanish and Portuguese colonization in the 16th century.

Exhibits of the history of the prehistoric period of Negara Darussalam and recent history are also in the historical gallery. The exhibits show traditional ways of life of many communities in the country as well as natural history with examples from flora and fauna. There are also pottery from Iran and Central Asia from the 9th and 10th centuries, blown glasses from Egypt and the Levant , a miniature manuscript of the Koran , woven textiles, gold jewelry, the ceremonial cannons that had been used in the Sultanate, as well Arms of the Sultanate.

Most of the artifacts come from the personal collection of the Sultan of Brunei, as well as the collection of silver and gold coins from a wide area of ​​the Islamic world. In addition, an exhibition is shown "The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan's Martial Arts" (the gesture of Budo: The history of Japanese martial arts), in which replicas of armor and weapons from Japan between the 8th and 14th Century. There is also an exhibition about the oil industry in Brunei by Brunei Shell Petroleum . Large-format exhibits are shown in rooms at the rear of the museum building in the park.
