Bruno Baumann (born January 10, 1955 in Leibnitz , Styria ) is an Austrian travel writer , filmmaker and trekking specialist.

Life

He studied history and ethnology at the universities of Graz and Munich . Baumann became known through his travels to remote regions of the world, which he documented in numerous books, films and lectures.

In 1989 he conquered the Taklamakan Desert on foot, followed by the Alashan Desert in 1994 . He undertook further expeditions in Tibet and in the Tibesti Mountains. In 1996 he crossed the Taklamakan again, this time following in the footsteps of Sven Hedin , in order to track down his contradicting myth of the so-called “caravan of death”.

In 2004 he discovered the sunken kingdom of Shangshung in Tibet, according to his own account . In fact, the ruins of the old Shangshung capital, Khyunglung, have long been known to Tibetologists. He connects that sunken realm with Shangri-La , which is actually based on a western imagination ( James Hilton's novel The Lost Horizon ) - which may have a real background.

For the publication of his book Kailash - Tibet's holy mountain , he received the Globetrotter travel book award for the best travel book of 2002.

Baumann now lives in Munich- Haidhausen , he is the chairman of the "Dana" association, which is committed to preserving Tibetan culture.
